Gabriella Cleuren, Family Beach Tahiti, 2006
Watercolor on paper, 15 x 20 cm (5 5/16 x 7 5/16 in.)
A particularly beautiful statue of a couple on Tahiti beach in Raquenez, where dunes line a stretch of beach. clearly visible here in this statue. The technique is very special. The drawing is done in red lines, marker, gives a powerful expression to the scene. The drawing was then washed with watercolor paint. Something between drawing and watercolor. To my surprise I found the same technique in old vases from the time of Alexander the Great, in the Nieuwe Kerk in Amsterdam; from more than 2000 years ago. Astonishing !

Gabriella Cleuren, Raquenez 01, 2007
Watercolor on paper, 20 x 15 cm (7 5/16 x 5 5/16 in.)
An image, watercolor, of a couple, in which the man supports his hesitant wife, his sunscreen in one hand. They walk up in the dunes to the rocky path. Behind them a view of the enormous beach, partly Tahiti in Raquenez, whose rocky passage ends in the sea at the back. An image of connectedness against a beautiful background Also drawn here with red marker (rare) to increase contrast and readability.

Gabriella Cleuren, Anomynus 04, 2007
Aquarel op Steinbach papier, 18 x 12 cm (7 x 4 5/8 in.)
Many summers I spent my summer time in Raquenez (Britanny), a small place with a peninsula, rocks, beaches and fishing mooring everywhere. I could sit there for hours and sketch passers-by who continued to enjoy a bit by the water, after a walk with a dog, and then disappeared into the high-lying dunes full of vegetation. Here a few visitors enjoying the sea view; in full holiday ornament and in the depth a fisherman towing his boat to the water.

Gabriella Cleuren, At the sea Raquenez, 2007
Watercolor on paper, 18 x 27 cm (7 1/8 x 10 5/8 in.)
Here the place where people embarked to go to the yacht at sea. The beautiful blue space and the smallness of the figures in the foreground give an idea of color and space. These watercolors are also a test to fix the drawing in different colors, which constitutes the character of the work. Sometimes it is recorded in black, blue or red marker, quite unusual as it is usually done in pencil. So not here. I wanted to test how the image pleased me the most.

Gabriella Cleuren, Beach and water, 2011
Oil chalk on Steinbach paper, 15 x 18 cm (5 7/8 x 7 in.)
An image of summer joy, the sea, and people on the beach. The images were taken on the beach Tahiti, Racquenez where I sat and recorded for hours and days. In order to keep the sea and beach visible, the figures are notated fragmentary, with at least a few lines to guarantee legibility, sometimes even transparent. The technique is in oil chalk which guarantees a direct writing and is not erased on the sand. It is a composition and omission exercise. What do I note to represent a figure with minimal means. It is also a coloring and writing exercise.

Gabriella Cleuren, Couple on beach - The island of Raquenez, 2006
Aquarel on Steinbach paper, 18 x 27 cm (7 x 10 5/8 in.)
A watercolor of a beach, in Raquenez with a view to Pointe de Trévignon. The light and color are held here opposite some moving figures. The Breton house hangs movably on top of the dunes where I walked daily in the white sand bordering the sea to yet another beach, with a different face. The yellow ocher and white limestone formations at the bottom create a beautiful contrast with the blue of the sea. A drawn watercolor!

Watercolor on Steinbach paper, 15 x 18 cm (5 7/8 x 7 in.)
A watercolor acrylic image of a fascinating view of green constellations, trees, a hedge, meadow and sky: yellow and blue as reinforcing opposites. It is a picture of growth and summer in its joyful aspects. A moving, uncomplicated image like music of color.

Gabriella Cleuren, Jumping and dog, 2007
Oil chalk on Steinbach paper, 21 x 15 cm (8 1/4 x 5 7/8 in.)
The joy of the playground. Two Jewish children jump on the trampoline at the Ster, a recreation resort, a popular walking place for Antwerp Jews. A curious dog in the foreground is watching. The girl is on her knees. The boy is skipping. A quick sketch with oil crayons captures the movement against a summery background, a tree with a shelter.

Gabriella Cleuren, Man and child, 2007
Oil chalk on Steinbach paper, 15 x 18 cm (5 7/8 x 7 in.)
A nice picture of people in green. A man with a child behind him is walking on the dike, along the water, visible in the small corner at the bottom left. This is a quick sketch of an interesting movement, a human dimension, a grandfather with his grandchild on a walk, opposite him a group of people in the forest, an exercise in capturing a group where the main characters still attract attention and being separated, how do you frame them all in green. The whole is written with color, oil chalk

Oil chalk on Steinbach paper, 21 x 15 cm (8 1/4 x 5 7/8 in.)
Two people meet, by chance, willingly? Who's to say. Yet there is something about a human relationship, an interesting man, a fascinating woman, as is the case with chance encounters that may or may not reach a little further. Asking the mind or carrying secrets that can be felt.

Gabriella Cleuren, Passers by, 2007
Watercolor on paper, 15 x 20 cm (5 5/16 x 7 5/16 in.)
A lightning-fast image of passers-by by the sea and water and near the rocks. One mother with child walks home, another rinses her bucket. In the distance a view of the beach and the green-covered rock wall. An image of Tahiti in Raquenez. Special is the drawing in red marker that prepares the contours so that the image is legible and not blurred.
