Gabriella Cleuren, Before the operation 02, 2018
Highly pigmented acrylics on prepared Steinbach 250/300 g/mg paper, 42 x 29 cm (16 1/2 x 11 3/8 in.)
When I put my realized virtual worlds on a line, unrealistic, real worlds (painted from memory), I realise that there is a repetitive phenomenon : in pain, illness, mental health problems and the care for a family member . It belongs to life. This brings the necessity to create recurrent images, variations of pictures every time after the condition. It is amazing to see how different they are shaped. I see that my personal involvement with the pain of others plays an important role in my work. It is almost a must and captures emotion, because the human being is a fragile creature.

Gabriella Cleuren, Wil ill, 2018
Highly pigmented acrylics on prepared Steinbach 250/300 g/mg paper, 42 x 29 cm (16 1/2 x 11 3/8 in.)
“Wil is my husband. He’s struggling with his health. He is surrounded, supported, connected. Of course you can never be 100% sure everything is going to be alright. That’s why the circle is half open, and dark, because there’s also a thread. It’s an unstable situation, like a heart sinking in water, deeper and deeper. The figure in the middle looks firm, he’s holding himself but his body is floating. The contours of his head are reduced to its most elementary form, a pictogram.”
